At only 22 pages it is not a novel, but I have been working on a fictional story. Here is a summary statement:
However, the detailed (two adult strangers know the same Swift passage?) and shared belief…
Pursuant to years of suspicion that the professional pursuit of the laws maybe should not be viewed as favorably as it often is, the story presents a satirical perspective on an attorney. Writers such as Heller, Hašek, Vonnegut, Waugh, Gogol, Orwell and Toole have brought great enjoyment through their humor. War is identified with the first three. While appreciating all of them, I believe this is a unique effort because of a different object. The potentially negative impact of the role of lawyers throughout society has not been central to satire.
Inspiration can be found within multiple written works. It is sometimes explicit. Relevant titles, physically arranged by the narrator, are briefly described in the opening pages. Consider a lone quote contained in Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, which is grouped there:
Here my master interposing, said, “it was a pity, that creatures endowed with such prodigious abilities of mind, as these lawyers, by the description I gave of them, must certainly be, were not rather encouraged to be instructors of others in wisdom and knowledge.” In answer to which I assured his honour, “that in all points out of their own trade, they were usually the most ignorant and stupid generation among us, the most despicable in common conversation, avowed enemies to all knowledge and learning, and equally disposed to pervert the general reason of mankind in every other subject of discourse as in that of their own profession.”
Though Swift can be among the most important of writers, and Gulliver’s Travels tends to be identified as his masterpiece, persons who have read the book know that lawyers are not thematic to it.
Attorneys typically do not have a higher degree in another discipline. As a result, they can implicitly be lacking in affirmative abilities and may effectively denigrate. Similarly, in work settings, the legal field can be championed as persons subordinate others in ways that can even be indignant. There are also a preponderance of lawyers who run for office and influence societal values, affecting everything from peace to health care.
In The Coxcomb with Limited Abilities, initially hostile characters find a similarity through their sardonic attitude toward professional jurists. An attorney is a villain, victim, and scourge, as might be presupposed by the narrator. The tale is one of danger, suspense and consequence.
